Prague sight seeing tips – what should not to be missed.
The Prague Castle
A national cultural monument, the symbol of more than millennial development of the Czech state. Originally it used to be the residence of princes and Kings of Bohemia. Since 1918 it is the seat of the president.
Charles Bridge
The oldest Prague bridge built in the place of the Judita's Bridge that had been badly damaged by a flood in 1342. The bridge gained its name in 1870, previously it was known as the Stone or Prague Bridge. It was found in 1357 by Charles IV and is 515m long and 10m wide. From 1683 – 1928 30 sculptures of saints were gradually set on its piers.
Bridge Towers
Lesser Town Bridge Towers - the smaller Romanesque tower was constructed in 12th century. The higher tower is of late gothic origin (1464)
Old Town Bridge Tower – it is the main entrance to the Charles bridge and was finished in 1380. It is richly adorned with sculptures – coats of arms of countries belonging to the Czech crown under the reign of Charles the IV.
Old Town Hall with the Astronomical Clock
Established 1338 as the seat of the Old Town authorities. In the top part of the astronomical clock the 12 apostles appear every hour between 9 am and 9pm. The bottom part was supplemented with a round calendarium incl. signs of zodiac, painted by Josef Manes in 1865.
Josefov - Prague Ghetto
It dates back to the 13th century but its present appearance is mainly the result of a vast redevelopment action undertaken between 1893 - 1913.
Powder Tower
A monumental entrance to the Old Town built by Matej Rejsek in the gothic style in 1475. Once it served as a gunpowder depot. In the late 19th century the tower was rebuild by J. Mocker.
St. Nicolas Church
One of the most valuable buildings of the "Prague Baroque" period with a dominant dome and a belfry. The inside decoration is a specimen of the high baroque style.
Petrín View Tower
An iron tower 60 m high, built in 1891 on the occasion of the Jubilee Exhibition as a free copy of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. 299 steps lead up to the top platform.
Church of Our Lady of Victory
An early baroque building from the 1611, rebuilt by the Carmelite order in 1634 – 1669. The church is world-famous thanks to the Prague Bambino - Infant Jesus wax figure (of the Spanish origin), which was presented to the church by Polyxena of Lobkowicz (1628).
Loretta
A Marian pilgrimage place with a copy of the Italian Santa Casa including also the baroque church of the Nativity. A cloister and chapels encircle the ground. The spire houses a carillon which consists of 27 Loretta bells, which tune the Marian song “ We great you a thousand time”. The most valuable item is the so-called Loretta treasure, a collection of sacral objects from the 16- 18th century. The most famous of these is the Diamond Monstrance’s adorned with 6 222 diamonds.
Vysehrad
Ancient legends situate the original seat of the Czech princes - the legendary Princess Libuse and the first Przemyslides - on this hill. In fact, however, this fort had not been founded until the Prague castle was already in existence.
